Objecting

Objecting to War is an ambitious research and education project working to uncover some of the forgotten stories of conscientious objectors in the First World War and correct numerous misaprehesions.

Some 20,000 men in Britain registered their opposition of war by becoming Conscientious Objectors in 1916-1919. Some 2,000 from the Greater London area alone. These men, young and old, rich and poor were from all walks of life and lived and from every part of the country. Today, they stand as an remarkable example of what people can do to resist war and militarism even at a time of war.

From Croydon to Enfield and Uxbridge to Havering, there are thousands of stories of anti-war activism, conviction and courage on the part of London’s Conscientious Objectors.

Where they are, we are too! The PPU and an ever-growing group of volunteer researchers and archivists, in London in particular, are hard at work finding these stories. Whether visiting libraries and local archives, or working with museums, schools and local history groups, the London Objecting to War project aims to work in each and every borough of London to make sure the men who said NO to war are remembered and the significance of their decision is not forgotten.

Please check out our news and comment section for updates on the project, take a look through our work in your local area, or get in touch if you would like to be involved in the project.
