MEN WHO SAID NO | ROAD TO CONSCRIPTION | OBJECTION | PRISONS | SENTENCED TO DEATH | TRIBUNALS | WIDER CONTEXT |
HENRY HERBERT COPE ARTHUR 1888 -

support

Henry Arthur had a very ordinary life before the start of the First World War. Living in New Malden, he was married, 28 years old and working as a civil servant. The difference between Henry and thousands of other men in the same situation around London was that Henry was a Quaker, with strongly held pacifist and anti-militarist views. When conscription was passed into law in 1916, Henry applied for exemption as a Conscientious Objector and appeared before the Maldens and Coombe Tribunal on the 4th of October 1916. He was passed exempt from Combatant Service on the condition that he take up medical work with the Friend's Ambulance Unit (FAU). It is likely that Henry went to the Tribunal having already set up alternative work with the FAU, and many COs, seeing conscription on the horizon, arranged work to begin after their Tribunal hearings. if Henry had not set up work with the FAU prior to his hearing, he would have been given a short period in which to organise work which, had he failed to do so, would have ended with his transfer to the Non-Combatant Corps under the control of the Army. Henry started work with the FAU shortly after his Tribunal hearing in the nearby Star and Garter Hotel which had been repurposed in early 1916 as a convalescent home for wounded and disabled soldiers. More than 20 COs worked under the FAU at the Star and Garter, providing medical, labour and nursing support for the important work with recuperating paralysed soldiers at the Hospital. Henry stayed at the Star and Garter until late 1918, when he returned home. He died in 1972.
