Harry Jesse Purkiss was born 17 February 1889 and lived at Seven Kings, Ilford, Essex. At the time of conscription in 1916 he was a teacher of modern languages and senior resident assistant master at a small boarding school, St Andrews, Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

The Tribunal, in its usually punitive way refused to allow him to stay in teaching and offered distant farm work in places such as Dorset or Cumberland. Subsequently medical advises was that he should remain in teaching.An offer of work at The King's School, Grantham was approved.
