ROBERT GEORGE PHILLIPS 1888 - | |||||||||
Conscientious Objectors could in some circumstances take up Work of National Importance as an alternative to being forced into the Army. Robert Phillips was one of these “WNI” COs. After appearing at the East Ham Tribunal, he appealed against their verdict to the Essex Appeal Tribunal which transferred him to the control of the Pelham Committee. This committee was set up to oversee the employment of Conscientious Objectors in Work of National Importance. This was no easy option and COs like Robert were frequently treated poorly. Robert was employed for over two years in farm work at around Essex and Hertfordshire. He was seen as a troublemaker who would talk about his Conscientious Objection and the motivating principles behind it at every opportunity and was shuffled between many different farms as a result.
