MEN WHO SAID NO | ROAD TO CONSCRIPTION | OBJECTION | PRISONS | SENTENCED TO DEATH | TRIBUNALS | WIDER CONTEXT |
STANLEY KENNEDY NORTH 1887 - 1942

support

Fugitive Conscientious Objectors were not unusual, with many men choosing to go on the run rather than be forced into uniform against their principles. Stanley Kennedy North's case is unusual, however, in that he seems to have never been caught! Stanley was an artist and well-known figure in the London social scene who held a socialist objection to the war. After being granted a temporary exemption from military service by the Fulham Tribunal, he absconded and remained in London throughout the war. One of his shelters seems to have been at the home of Alan Gardiner, a fellow Conscientious Objector, in South Kensington. After the war, Stanley continued his work in the arts, becoming a well known, if controversial figure.
