DUNCAN HENRY KING

support

Duncan Henry King was a Quaker Conscientious Objector who served with the Friends Ambulance Unit during the war. Duncan, like the vast majority of other Conscientious Objectors applied to his local Tribunal for Absolute Exemption - but the Tribunal turned down his application. Instead, he was given Exemption from Combatant Service conditional on joining the Friends Ambulance Unit. This was a common verdict that Quaker COs received, especially if they had expressed interest in the FAU at their Tribunal. Even though it was common, the Tribunals had no legal power to enforce it - or even to pass the verdict! Nevertheless, many COs, Duncan King included, went on to work with the FAU for the duration of the war after being recommended there by a local Tribunal decision.
