JAMES CAMERON 1891 -

support

James and Peter Cameron were brothers living in Clapham when both were conscripted in mid 1916. Both men were Absolutist COs who refused any compromise with military or civil authorities over their treatment as COs. They had similar experiences - both were ordered to report to barracks as members of the Non-Combatant Corps after being turned down by their Tribunal hearings. The brothers were arrested in August 1916 as absentees, fined and handed over to the military at the Kingston Barracks. From Kingston, both men faced Court Martial and were sentenced to one years hard labour in Wormwood Scrubs prison. Once in Wormwood Scrubs, their stories began to diverge. While both James and Peter turned down the offer of the Home Office Scheme, refusing to accept the conditions COs had to sign to in order to take on the work, James spent six months in Wandsworth before being released. He would stay in Wormwood Scrubs and Wandsworth for another two years, completing three sentences before his final release in April 1919.  Peter was separated from his brother after his Central Tribunal hearing, being sent to Wandsworth for his first sentence of one year's hard labour. During his third sentence, this time in Canterbury, he went on hunger-strike in protest at the poor conditions and harsh treatment of long-serving Conscientious Objectors. He was finally released after force feeding and transfer to York Castle in April 1919.
