ADRIAN ALLINSON 1890 - 1959

support

Before the First World War the artistic community of London was tightly bound in several groups - some of which were home to many men who would become Conscientious Objectors in 1916. Adrian Allinson was a member of the London Group and associated with the influential Bloomsbury Group. An avant garde artist, Adrian was one of several members of the group to declare his pacifism in 1916. Unlike others, Adrian did not go to prison, and spent the war working in London as an artist for newspapers and theatres. For many years it was a mystery as to how he managed to retain this work even though others with more vital roles were sent to prison, but it appears that Adrian was ruled medically unfit for service with the army, and was therefore largely left alone by the authorities. After the war he continued with his art and was a noted designer and prolific painter - eventually becoming an official sanctioned war artist during the Second World War.
